Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding - Part 3 Preparation for Reassembly
How to properly clean the components and wool felt rings, prepare components for reassembly, measure for spindle shaft runout, apply a high spot witness mark on a precision machine spindle and installing a new collet key.

We will share how to clean and prepare your spindle components, how to maintain pressed wool felt components, how to measure a spindle for runout how to find the high spot on a spindle even if it is only 1 Micron (0.001mm or ~0.000040"), how to determine and mark that spot and prepare & install (if needed) a spindle collet key.

PRECISION MACHINE SPINDLE REBUILDING

Here are the prior released Parts of the Spindle Rebuilding Series you may need to watch before you continue forward here.

In Part 1 of our opening video to this series on Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding, we discussed that our spindles had been disassembled to prepare for this spindle rebuilding series, we do have one and we disassemble and share it in part 2..

We shared the tools, materials and environment needed to rebuild spindles from start to finish in detail.

In Part 2, we shared how to disassemble a precision machine spindle, a Levin Accessory Spindle.

We covered the complete disassembly, the specific tools, the processes and the procedures to disassemble a spindle in a very detailed step by step method.

TOPICS COVERED - PART 3

00:00:00 - START

00:00:17 - 0. INTRODUCTION

Preparation of each spindle component is shared paying attention to the finite details of this part in the series will make for a longer lasting and greater precision spindle.

00:01:39 - 1. CLEANING ALL OF THE PARTS

Cleaning is followed by inspection of each component and the choice to just go with a cleaned part, or remake, or buy, or rework each and you can also improve the original finishes for cosmetic appeal.
(NOTE)
We never clean bearings, not even brand new ones that come out of an NOS (new old stock) spindle that has never ran, we share why.

00:10:53 - 2. CLEANING THE FELT RINGS

We share how to correctly clean and maintain the highest quality wool pressed felt made into rings for each open end of the Levin spindle or headstock shafts, how to correctly utilize Woolite Delicates hand washing detergent. We touch on the aluminum spindle bearing cover felt ring retainers flattening process.

00:41:55 - 3. MEASURING THE SPINDLE FOR RUNOUT

Small spindles have really short spindle shafts, so finding high spots on really high tolerance, high quality spindles is tough, but we find one and share the process.

a) Find High Spot on Spindle
We find a high spot on the spindle utilizing a 1 micro increment dial indicator and a 10x power loop and we share how to properly mark the spindle shaft up so the marks remain until the bearings are reinstalled.

01:17:38 - 4. REPLACING THE COLLET KEY ON THE SPINDLE

This section can be an option depending on the wear and condition of a collet key within the spindle.
We share how to know if you need to replace it now, our next time you rebuild a spindle.
