00:00:18 - 0. INTRODUCTION

We have finished all of the Levin spindle part preparation to begin assembly of the spindle from start to finish. We start by sharing some good spindle rebuilding practices before getting started.

00:08:10 - 1. APPLYING GREASE TO BEARINGS

We do not pack grease like you would on your automobile wheel bearings because you are going to learn about using measured syringes when applying the grease in precision machine spindle bearings.

These bearings are precision and require the best application of grease with great precision in a very clean controlled environment.

We discuss that installing precision bearings you only have one chance to get them installed right, so attention to details in this section is very important as we go over what bearing installation tools and die sizes you can buy and ones we made in Delrin are and how come the dead blow hammer is important.

We share during assembly that you need to take care to keep, you’re in progress spindle assembly safe and we have ways to help you install the spindle nut and its small spindle locking screw fastener, we show how to safely hold the spindle for each, the mill, drill press, grinder, but not the micro-drill.

We discuss the grinding attachment mounting plate the length of the two screws differs from the Levin & Son Blue Print. We share it is the best practice to always replace your general fasteners during machine and spindle rebuilds.

We show you how to apply oil correctly to fastener threads during assembly work.

We install the pressed wool felt rings and there aluminum retainer rings that are designed to protect the internal bearings, these covers are aluminum and might be referred to as either bearing caps or dust covers.

We share a really neat (though optional) bearing cap installation press from our watchmaker tools.

We really express that these soft aluminum bearing caps have really fine threads so we show you how to start the threads correctly as a good tip for all threaded items.

We share how you place the bearing caps onto the spindle while tucking in the wool felt rings so they do not pinch or bind during the installing and tightening process. A spanner wrench lightly tightens the bearing caps onto the main spindle body.

We remind you to continually test your spindle to confirm the spindle always spins freely because this practice is so you know WHEN something went wrong and it can be corrected.

We close out this spindle rebuilding Part 3a with the installation of the belt pulley onto the rear of the spindle shaft.
