Assembling a Levin Closed Style Headstock, covering the complete spindle assembly for a serial number 10000 or above standard spindle rebuild version. We install precision bearings, bearing caps, spindle locking plunger, slinger and headstock mounting hardware.

For early closed style headstock, radius top body or serial numbered 9999 or lower, please continue to our video on Closed Style Headstock Part 3d.

PRECISION MACHINE SPINDLE REBUILDING

Here are the prior released Parts of the Spindle Rebuilding Series.

In Part 1, our opening video to this series on Precision Machine Spindle, we discuss spindle rebuild preparation and processes. We share the tools, materials and environment needed to rebuild spindles in detail.

Spindle Rebuilding Tip:
Test your spindle to confirm the spindle always spins freely after each assembly stage.

00:09:03 - 1. PARTS REVIEW

The parts review is to check to be sure you have all of the necessary parts and materials in order before you grease the bearings, there are no felts bearing covers in a closed style headstock.

00:22:23 - 2. PREPARING HEADSTOCK FOR SPINDLE ASSEMBLY

The Levin closed style headstock really needs to be clean at this stage. We go off camera to open, then grease our bearings, covered in Part 3a.

Tip:
Lightly oil your components only as you are going to install them.

00:25:27 - 3. INSTALLING BEARINGS ONTO THE SPINDLE

Precision bearings allow only one chance to get them installed right, attention to detail in this section is very important, we go over various Levin Spindle bearing sizes, bearing installation tools you may need for this 3C collet size spindle.

We show you how to read bearing arrangement and share inner/outer race markings, high spots placement fro spindle and bearing relationships to one another. We share how to keep bearings clean during the assembly.

We show you how to start all threaded items correctly as a good tip for threaded fasteners.

01:24:09 - 4. INSTALLING THE BELT PULLEY & SPINDLE NUT

We assemble the spindles locking plunger, how to tension it.
We install the bearing seal style belt pulley and key.

The spindle plunger is utilized for proper tightening of the spindle nut onto the spindle shaft. The goal here is to securely install the spindles slit nut with a spanner wrench, then the small fastener that follows making this a very good solution.

Tip:
Download our spindle rebuilding documentation, forms and checkoff sheets that will help you are easy and free to download.

01:41:32 - 5. INSTALL SLINGER & MOUNTING PARTS

We share how the slinger operates, how the slinger protects the spindle bearings from foreign materials.
We share how mounting the headstock to the lathe bed occurs, some additional oiling notes and the belt pulley cover installs later.

02:01:49 - 6. FINAL THOUGHTS

Time to perform the spindle collet seat run-out and the spindle break-in procedure, covered in Part 4.

We share thoughts about rebuilding experiences for this 3C collet spindle rebuild. There remains one final detail the company machine tool tag from Louis Levin & Son, Inc.
