People hear the word accountability and often think, “Oh no. They're out to get me,” says Executive Coach Robb Holman. The reason why, he says, is because the average person and leader, when they hold someone accountable, they're much quicker to point out the bad or missing the mark or the gap that exists, as opposed to being obsessed with the good that we're doing.
“But what would it look like if we hold one another accountable with who we really are,” asks Robb? There's no need to compare ourselves with other people as well as the good that we're actually doing in our job, in the home and in the world. When we begin to go about accountability with that quick to point out the good, when we actually get to some of the missing gaps and missing the marks and stuff like that, we're gonna actually be tackling that out of a completely different place.
We know more of who we are and who we're not. Thus, we're much more willing to work on some of our weak areas. See the gap begin to shrink, begin to close, and be consistent with truly who we are and our sphere of influence.
