How did ARC troopers change the way Jedi viewed clone troopers? The Clone Wars presented a challenge for the Jedi Order, and they initially viewed the clone army as a convenient tool at an inconvenient time. Despite seeing the clones as humans, it wasn’t until they met the Advanced Recon Commandos, or ARC troopers, that the Jedi understood their individuality. The Kaminoans first deployed these elite clone soldiers in a desperate attempt to defend against the Separatist invasion of Kamino.

Alpha-17 joined Shaak Ti, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker in protecting developing infants during the battle. Alpha-17 was prepared to destroy the cloning facility so it wouldn't fall into the hands of the enemy. Telling the Jedi, “They grow up loyal to the Republic, or they don’t grow up at all,” emphasized the stark difference between the ARCs and the average, order-following clone trooper.
The Jedi were surprised by Alpha's intelligence and ability to plan ahead, because they had never seen this in a clone before. As the war progressed, most Jedi came to know the clones as individuals, learning the chosen names of the troopers under their charge.
