In the far north of Limburg -Belgium you will find our provincial desert. Anyone who now thinks of scorching temperatures and extreme drought is misled by the name "Sahara", which is also customary to call the region in Lommel. This name does refer to the fine pale sand that occurs on the surface and only allows such sparse vegetation that the area is reminiscent of a desert landscape. It is the harmful air emissions from the Lommel-Werkplaatsen zinc factory from the first half of the last century that are responsible for this.
The sand mentioned here was deposited by the wind from the north during the last ice age. It is called cover sand because it occurs on the surface over large areas in Flanders and the Netherlands. Where it is no longer held by vegetation, it is again the plaything of the wind, which makes it drift again.
But other layers of sand occur under that cover sand, which are of great economic importance to the region. This concerns the well-known Lommel and Molzand. Let's start with the very light green Lommelzand. Many other sands we know are more brown, yellow or rosy. This color is mainly due, or should we say, due to iron oxides, which mean that they can usually only be used for architectural applications and therefore also have a limited sales value. The Lommelzand, which occurs just below the cover sand, is still fairly light in color compared to all those sands. Also because it is quite coarse, it is a valued raw material for the production of high-quality concrete products.
