In this video, we demonstrate Rudolf Steiner's "O" walking exercise. This exercise is performed by two people.
Rudolf Steiner describes the "O" as "every rounding of the limbs coming together, combined with the sensation of a loving embrace." "The 'O' brings us into a more intimate relationship with that which we perceive. Thus, the 'O' essentially becomes a gesture when not only does the person perceive themselves, but, starting from within, perceive another thing, or another being, that they wish to embrace."
Our detailed video on the "O" is linked below in the description.
Now, we walk the "O," corresponding to the arm movement, as a circular shape on the floor.
To begin, we stand one behind the other and remain facing forward throughout the entire exercise. We move counter-clockwise. One person begins their form, the other continues the movement. In this way, we link one movement to the other.
Now, we walk the "O" as a circular shape on the floor, following the arm movement. We continue moving, first faster and then slowing down again.
Now we do the whole exercise, simultaneously forming an "O" with our arms.
This exercise strengthens the diaphragm and thus the entire respiratory system.
Rudolf Steiner's description of this exercise: "Now let's imagine the movement with one of the ladies standing here, the other here, one behind the other; when you arrive, she performs this movement, always facing forward, then, as the movement continues, you perform this movement here, you this one; you link one movement to the next and accompany it with the "O" arm position. Of course, the people doing this must be encouraged to start at a certain pace; first slowly, but then gradually faster and faster, letting them transition from fast to slow again. Then it is a movement that can significantly strengthen the diaphragm and thus the entire respiratory system."
He continued: “If you omit the O-movement with the arms, you can use a healthy person to participate; but it is naturally best to use two people who are familiar with this healing technique.”
