Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks On 17th - 18th November
With their quick, brilliant meteors, the Leonids are often one of the most frequent yearly meteor showers. The Leonid meteor shower is expected to peak on November 17–18, 2023, between midnight and dawn. It will be active from November 6–30.
The name comes from the radiant, which is the location where meteors appear to pour from and is located near the head, or "sickle," of the constellation Leo the Lion.
Comet Tempel-Tuttle is the parent to the Leonid meteor shower. Tiny fragments are left in the comet's wake as it orbits the sun. At up to 70 km/s, cometary debris penetrates our planet's atmosphere, vaporising and producing the light streaks known as meteors.
