Ruth, an immigrant by birth, had no natural part in the covenant of Abraham. She grew up in a society steeped in sexual immorality. However, due to the unfortunate circumstances of an Israelite family seeking asylum to escape starvation, she married a son of the covenant. When tragedy struck, and she became a young widow with no apparent hope for the future, Ruth chose to value the covenant deeply. Clinging to her only remaining connection to it—her mother-in-law—she demonstrated respect, gratitude, and humility. By doing so, Ruth entered the land of promise and ultimately shared in the blessing of Abraham.
