❓”But I heard the IUD caused [insert many erroneous facts]”
.
👍 Generally there are TWO types of IUD’s
.
👊 Copper—the US one lasts 10 years, zero hormones, creates barrier To make it harder for the sperm to get through the cervical canal, may cause heavier/crampier periods
.
💪 The “progesterone” IUD (brands are Mirena/liletta in US) has progesterone in the apparatus that Keeps the uterine lining thin (so that during your normal cycle where your regular hormones would typically thicken the uterine lining and then have it shed as a period—the Lining won’t do that—leading to much lighter periods or no period—yes it’s safe!), can stay in 7 years (though ongoing studies may agree with longer)…other versions with SLIGHTLY less hormone and shorter span exist as well…THIS HORMONE STAYS LOCAL IN YOUR UTERINE lining for the most part (listen up for the details on this and on whether it will
Cause all the things people think it might!)
.
‼️BOTH IUDs are safe and Excellent forms of contraception (and in the case of the progesterone one an effective tool to decrease bleeding even without needing contraception!) BUT BOTH still require that you make EVERY EFFORT to avoid gonorrhea and chlamydia (i.e. condoms/monogamy!) bc these can lead to significant infection in the uterus
