The technique of primacy and recency means that people will generally remember the first and last things they see. Making a great (not good) first impression with the judge and prosecutor cannot be overstated. I believe as you begin a relationship it sets the tone for the process. If you begin it well it tends to end well, if begun badly it tends to end badly. Judges have many cases and they remember not only your face but your FIRST IMPRESSION on them.
