Baltic Sea (Varangian Sea; Polish. Morze Bałtyckie, German. Ostsee, n.-German. Oostsee, Swedish. Östersjön, dat. Østersøen, fin. Itämeri, est. Läänemeri, Latvian. Baltijas jūra, lit. Baltijos jura) is an inland sea of Eurasia, located in Northern Europe (it also partially washes the shores of Western and Eastern Europe). It belongs to the Atlantic Ocean basin.

The extreme northern point of the Baltic Sea is located near the Arctic Circle (65 ° 40 ' s. s.), the extreme southern point is near the city of Wismar (53 ° 45 ' s. s.).

The extreme western point is located in the Flensburg area (9°10' VD), the extreme eastern point is in the St. Petersburg area (30°15' VD).

The surface area of the sea (without islands) is 419 thousand km2. The volume of water is 21.5 thousand km3. Due to the huge flow of rivers, the water has a low salinity and therefore the sea is brackish. It is the world's largest sea with such a feature.
