A fjord is a geographical term for a deep, narrow, and elongated sea or lake drain. It has steep land located on three sides and a passage to the ocean as the other. The opening towards the sea is called the mouth of the fjord. Fjords are created during the glaciation process. They develop when a glacier retreats, creating a u-shaped valley within it which the sea can flow into.

Most fjords are saltwater, however, some inlets are freshwater as they are connected to a freshwater lake. Scoresby Sund, Greenland is the largest fjord in the world. It is 350km long and up to 600m deep.
