Inside Renovated Kerala Traditional Residence Blending Heritage with Modernity | Home Tour | ArchPro
This renovation in Thodupuzha redefines how heritage architecture can evolve without losing its identity. The Muttom Residence by Edom Architects is not a replacement of the old house, but a careful continuation, where traditional Kerala architecture is preserved and reinterpreted through modern spatial upgrades.
The project began with a clear intent: retain the emotional and architectural character of the original structure while introducing contemporary comfort and clarity. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the design works through restoration, extension, and material recalibration.
Wood becomes the primary expressive element used across rafters, veneers, and custom furniture, bringing warmth back into the reworked structure. This is balanced with natural stone, clay roof tiles, and structural columns that preserve the tactile language of traditional Kerala homes.
A key design intervention is the introduction of custom jalli screens, which serve a dual role, maintaining privacy while allowing filtered light and airflow. These elements bridge old and new architectural logic without visually breaking continuity.
Rather than isolating the original structure, the renovation strengthens it. Existing forms are retained, refined, and restructured to support modern living patterns, ensuring that heritage is not treated as memory, but as an active framework for daily life.
The result is a home where time does not feel linear, old and new coexist in the same spatial rhythm without conflict.
