Launch School Approach To Learning

1) “First, it should be pointed out that our singular goal at Launch School is to push people to launch new careers at the best companies possible. Importantly and counterintuitively, it's not about jobs at all; launching a career requires a far more long-term mindset and a much more thorough training process - you have to be willing to learn for years instead of months.”
2) Second, the entire learning journey is much more nuanced than most people think, and what and how you study depends on where you are on this journey. We will articulate this idea in more detail in the sections below.
3) The Phases of learning
a) Explore - New to journey, learning the mental models of the ecosystem, the focus is on high level play or embodied learning top-down. Stage can take weeks to years to decades.
b) Serious Student - “it becomes evident that if one really wants to understand what's going on to a professional level, the path must start from fundamentals and first principles and requires a slow accumulation of sound mental models each step of the way. The way to achieve that is a structured curriculum and a switch in mindset from that of play and fun to rigorous studying and deliberate
practice.” - (You start the process of deconstruction / Bottom-Up approach). This phase is never really over but Launch School’s Core Curriculum represents this phase.
c) Professional - At this phase you apply all of the bottom up learning to professional skills and high level concepts. You once again return to a top-down embodied approach to learning where you are
focusing on applying skills. At this point you are pushing the limits of the skills you have developed and fitting the larner pieces of the knowledge puzzle together.
4) Everything about the way launch school is structured is designed to allow students to complete this journey. Potentially the biggest result of this focused is the mastery based approach to learning used in the core curriculum. The idea is to be able to take a variable input and transform that into a uniform output (highly-skilled student armed with first principles software engineering knowledge).
a) The core of mastery based learning is about allowing for variable input (quality and experience of student) while maintaining the quality of output.
CONCLUSION
I will explore the topic of mastery based learning further in another video. The important thing to note is that it is the way learning most new subjects should be approached and is a highly robust way to acquire all kinds of new skills. The many applications for this learning model cannot be over-emphasized.
