Lessons Learned From My Launch School Studies
INTRO - these are the lessons I learned working in launch school. So far I have been through most of the back end section of the course and have documented some of the highlights of my studies and the lessons. These are my main takeaways so far.
1) Set realistic completion timeframes / goals / milestones for your studies.
a) Look at the article “how long it takes” and plan your studies accordingly.

b) When looking at these time frames, pay special attention to the relative amount of time different courses will take.
c) While there is some variation between individuals, there are some large trends that seem to hold. EXAMPLE The back end section is long takes longer then the intro course or the applications sections for networks and databases takes longer then the intro courses for those sections.
d) Plan your life around your studies (as much as possible). - If you listen to some of the early podcasts they talk about life events being the biggest limiting factor. Make sure you have your life situation squared away. - Military example, it’s not the material or the course that will trip you up, it’s outside factors.
2) Assume your progress through the course will be about as fast as other people who have taken the course.
a) This will account for people who are overconfident and for people who are more capable than they think.
b) EXAMPLE - I couldn’t believe how long some of the courses were taking people. When I started with many of them, I felt like I was talking waaay too long. When I looked back on those periods where it felt like it was too long It was about the same as other students in a similar situation (Part-time, working a demanding job etc…)
3) Don’t compare yourself to students who are in entirely different circumstances. For example, if you are learning part-time while doing a demanding job, don’t compare yourself the the person who dropped out of college and is doing Launch School full time. Similarly, if you quit a job to pursue Launch School full time and are living in your parents basement until you get through Capstone, don’t look at part time students like myself and compare your progress, you will be going waaay to slow.
CONCLUSION - The #1 recommendation is to read reviews of a number of different students by looking for their medium articles and listening to their podcast interviews. This is the best way to get an idea of how students that faced circumstances similar to your own were able to successfully complete the course and get the results they wanted.
