Pro tips to up your downhill running technique👇
Ahead of this weekend's Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra and Rab Pinnacle Ridge Extreme mountain running races, Rab athlete Sara Willhoit shares her advice for taking steep descents at speed.
"1. Build strength.
Balance and strength are key components in downhill running. Reverse lunges, single leg squats, weighted squats and step ups strengthen the quads and prepare them for the descent.
2. Plan ahead.
Look ahead, or past the person in front of you, and plan your route, so you know where to put your foot. Find your own route and remember the most direct line might not be the fastest if it's rocky or more technical.
3. Take the brakes off.
There's not much free in life but gravity is, so use it. Don't put the brakes on and waste all that free energy. Let gravity propel you downhill but maintain control.
All the above help you maintain control, along with using your arms to help with balance and wearing grippy shoes.
If you are out of control, you're going too fast. Good descenders are always in control, even when they’re moving at speed."
