Carabiner gates split down the middle?

These carabiners were left near the ocean for a few years. All of that salty ocean air caused their gates to fuse shut and crack right down the middle. How strong is a carabiner in this sort of condition? As you might expect, they were about as strong as the carabiner is rated to in the open gate configuration. In our first test, both carabiners broke at the same time!
