Could this rusty hanger kill you?
These plated steel hangers were left on the Pacific coast for the last 4 years. Unsurprisingly, they didn't hold up too well. Even thought the outer layers were peeling right off, we were surprised by how strong they still were. The metal inside was still pretty good and they broke in the low 20 kN range. Since we can never see the inside of a hanger without breaking it, its always best practice to replace rusty bolts and hangers with something that will hold up better. Do you want to trust your life to something that just MIGHT be strong enough?
