Why does the spider build a web?
You have probably seen a spider's web before.
Spiders are known for their webs. Their web is made of sticky silk threads. The spider makes them in its abdomen. They build these webs to catch their prey. Usually it is small insects that get caught in the spider's web. With its bite, the spider first paralyzes the prey animal. Then it rolls up its victim and injects it with venom. This turns the insect into a tasty pulp, which the spider then sucks up. Ingenious, but also a little creepy, right?
The silk that the spider uses to build its web is very special. It is more elastic than rubber. And stronger than a thread of steel. Some researchers even believe: If you were to build a large web out of thick spider silk: Then this web could catch an airplane in midair.
In a nutshell.: With its web, the spider catches its prey and then turns it into a pulp before eating its prey.
