Alert! Android Malware Spread by Telegram Bots - Stay Safe!
A global campaign targets Android devices using Telegram bots to spread SMS-stealing malware, capturing OTPs for over 600 services. Zimperium researchers, who have tracked this since February 2022, discovered 107,000 malware samples. The attackers, driven by financial motives, use infected devices for authentication and anonymization. The malware is distributed through malvertising and Telegram bots that lure victims with promises of pirated Android apps. Most victims are in India and Russia, with significant numbers in Brazil, Mexico, and the US. Captured SMS messages are sent to 'fastsms.su,' which sells virtual phone numbers for anonymization, likely using infected devices without victims' knowledge. Victims may face unauthorized charges and potential legal implications. To stay safe, avoid downloading APKs from outside Google Play, don’t grant risky permissions, and keep Play Protect active.
