This video tutorial steps you through what a shim is, how it works in conjunction with the GoBilda system, and why you might want to use a shim in your robotics build.

In goBILDA assemblies, shims are used primarily for fine-tuning the spacing and alignment of components to ensure smooth operation and reduce friction. For example:

Reducing Friction: In wheel assemblies, shims may be removed or adjusted to minimize excess friction, improving the wheel's rotation.
Shaft Support: Shims can also be used on shafts to ensure proper contact with bearings’ racers and prevent unwanted movement.
Motor Alignment: When mounting a motor, shims can be placed on the motor shaft to adjust its position relative to other components. For example, three 0.5mm shims may be added to the motor shaft to achieve the desired alignment.
Bearing Support: Shims are often installed under V-Groove ball bearings to ensure they spin freely. A 0.25mm shim is recommended under each bearing in certain assemblies.
Gear and Spacer Adjustments: Shims can be used between gears and spacers to fine-tune their positioning. For example, 6mm ID shims can be placed between a miter gear and a spacer for precise adjustments.
