“last-saved” in ODK, KoBoToolbox, and XLSForm
Hello Fellow Aid, Development & Social Data Practitioners!
Have you ever been collecting data in a community, and you’ve had to answer a question over and over again, entering the same data each time you fill out a questionnaire.
Things like the name of the community, the location, today’s date, the venue name, your name as the data collector, even the GPS data if you’re just doing several interviews at the same venue.
And you may have thought to yourself - isn’t there a way for my phone to know what I’m going to enter in the location question, because I’ve just entered the same thing 10 times!!
Well, yes there is a way to do that.
In this video lesson, we’re going to quickly show you how to create a ‘default’ response in your KoBoToolbox or ODK questionnaire, which defaults to the value you last entered in a previous form submission.
You’d want to use this feature especially on that ‘basic’ data that you normally enter at the beginning or end of a form - e.g., which country or community are you in, what’s the data collector name, etc.
This default is device-specific - so it will default to the last-saved value from this question, entered and submitted using this phone.
Please note, this doesn’t work with encrypted forms and it doesn’t work for questions within repeat groups.
