In this video I built over 13000 KAPLA planks in less than 3 days. A highly ambitious build, there were many challenges along the way, and I’m lucky I even got to build this tower in the first place.
Like last year, I was invited again to build a Kapla tower for my college’s annual technical conference. This time I attempted a more ambitious design with multiple new mechanisms designed from scratch. I received a ton of ping pong balls from KEVA this past summer and wanted to use ‘em all in a single contraption. So I designed a fountain that allows the balls to flow out each of the four sides. Additionally, I designed a reservoir system so every ball could roll out of the fountain before the tower was destroyed. It required extensive testing at home before I could even think about laying planks down at my college’s auditorium.
The construction process was even more challenging. I almost wasn’t even allowed to enter the auditorium, and I had to build it in a different part of the room than originally planned. I also had exams on all of the available building days, so I had to make time to study for those too (I got over 97% on all those exams btw). Needless to say I barely got any sleep during those three days. Any free time was spent building at full speed.
Unfortunately, I did not get to finish the entire tower. Not only was it entirely too big, I underestimated the plank count by several thousand, even after doing a full-scale prototype of each wing. I had placed over 13000 planks before I crapped out around midnight on the final day of building. The collapse was also a disaster. I forgot to take out the protections due to brain fog, the fountain got stuck in a way that never happened during testing, and the force multipliers didn’t destroy the whole tower. But hey, at least I got to see that fountain action after one of the sections fell.
Overall this was my most ambitious and stressful build, even surpassing my experience at Olympia London last year with the World Record Tower. In a week full of exams reminiscent of finals week, I managed to place over 13000 planks by myself and didn’t knock the tower early, even when building at breakneck speeds. I definitely outdid myself this time, while there were many flaws, it could’ve easily ended up a lot worse any step of the way.
