For most of history, we completely misunderstood autism. In 1911, doctors thought it was a symptom of schizophrenia. In 1943, they assumed it only affected babies. In 1980, it was barely recognized as its own thing. And it wasn’t until 2013 that we finally called it Autism Spectrum Disorder.

So if autism feels like a “new” diagnosis, it’s not because it suddenly appeared—it’s because we just started getting it right. There’s no need to panic. The more we understand, the better we can support autistic individuals. 💙
