In this video, you will join me along an exciting eurovelo 8 bikepacking trip as...
I left Cannes previous day, heading towards a French natural park. This morning, I woke up in the middle of nowhere, on a concrete platform next to a busy road, surrounded by forest. I was ready to tackle the next 120 kilometers to Manosque.
On the road I stopped on a bridge over a forest canyon to take in the view and reflect on my next move. Then, I finally ate a French baguette on the second day. It wasn't as rubbery and gummy as the non-French ones, still edible.
The road through the nature park was calm and relaxing, just me and other bikers, no cars, unlike the stressful coastline roads from Nice. Then, a fly or something hit my right eyeball. I regretted not having sunglasses to protect my eyesight.
After 30 kilometers, I arrived at the first water fountain and took a break. The road got worse, with off-road rocky gravel uphill sections, not rideable on a Brompton.
In Draguignan, I stopped at McDonald's to taste French McDonald's for the first time. At 14 USD, it was expensive but very good with a blue cheese menu. After the heavy meal, I took a nap on the McDonald's bench to get energy for biking to Manosque. I found an Aldi before by the road, stopped, and resupplied, surprised by the cheap prices compared to what I'd seen so far in France.
Unfortunately, I had to leave Draguignan because of the weather forecast, but the city seemed culturally diverse with a lot of quirks. The road out of town was full of traps and dead ends.
Then, I almost hit a car in a long single-track tunnel. It was really close.
At Salerne, I hoped to refill water but it was a false positive. Fortunately, a local pointed me to one not on the map. Then, after sunset, around 9 pm, I stopped by a huge gravel parking lot, quiet and sidelined by the main road, which looked like a safe spot for wild camping.
I didn't make it to Manosque, which is going to be tomorrow's goal. More about that in the next episode.
