Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that creates intricate patterns using only thin pieces of wood, without using any nails. This technique has been used for centuries to decorate buildings and is still highly valued for its warm feel and eco-friendly nature. The city of Okawa, in Fukuoka Prefecture, historically known for its woodworking industries, is also famous for its kumiko tradition. We met two kumiko artisans: the first is the seventh generation of a family of artisans who is breaking new ground with their innovative designs. The second uses kumiko techniques to create products such as lamps and lampshades, perfectly suited to modern interiors. This craft, with its long history, continues to evolve.
