Kote-e The Japanese art of plaster

Traditional Japanese plasterers use only a trowel or float to apply a mixture of lime, seaweed glue, and hemp. In the late 19th century, they began using these techniques to create plaster murals known as kote-e on exterior walls. Originally, these were talismans to protect homes from fire and bad luck. Today, they are considered works of art. Contemporary artist Jingo creates unique, three-dimensional works using white plaster that appear to leap off the wall. The popularity of kote-e art is experiencing a revival, with exhibitions and competitions taking place throughout the country.
