「Learn Japanese」Locational Markers へ, に, で
へ and に as destination markers
The two particles へ and に are interchangeable particles used when referring to something moving from one location to another. In these cases, the へ is pronounced as え. When used subsequent to interrogatives such as どこ(doko) and どこか (dokoka), these particles are not dropped.
Example(s):
家(へ/に)帰ります。
Uchi (e/ni) kaerimasu .
I am going home.
明日、どこか(へ/に)行くつもりですか？
Ashita, doko ka (e/ni) iku tsumori desuka?
Do you plan to go anywhere tomorrow?

に as location marker
に is used to indicate a location wherein a thing or person exists in. Existential verbs include aru, iru, irassharu.
Example(s):
キングコングはワールド・トレイド・センターのうえにいます。
King Kong wa World Trade Center no ue ni imasu.
King Kong is atop the World Trade Center.
