What started out around 4 p.m. on Tuesday as thick black smoke billowing out of upper floor windows at the vacant Pines Hotel in Fallsburg quickly turned into bright orange flames shooting into the sky.

The once-grand hotel at 202 Laurel Avenue has been vacant for years.

Several Sullivan County fire departments were called to the scene to provide manpower to fight the flames.

Built in 1933, the once stately 400-room hotel closed down in 1998 and has since been the target of graffiti and vandalism.
