The case is officially closed, and the incident in Florida’s Flagler High School in 2023 has ended with a prison term of 5 years, 15 years of probation, and a long road to healing for the parties involved. Some say justice has been served while others see the punishment against defendant, Brendan Depa, as harsh, and lacking consideration towards his disability. This week, I’m offering my take on the incident as we continue grappling with the question, what are the appropriate consequences and treatments for students who commit violence against teachers?
