Black Clover reminds me of an old debate; which is better hard work or natural talent?
In a world filled with magic, lacking the ability to use it while you're rival brims with it, it hardly seems fair.
But besides these two friendly rivals embodying their archetypes. There seems to be an underlying and possibly subconscious theme behind this trope — less of about their abilities but temperament.
It's a theme that comes through some of our favorite characters. A hard work ethic tends to win in the end. But I don't think creators craft stories to favor a solid work ethic.
Mr every fledgling and relatively weak Goku, You need a prodigy like Vegeta to challenge and use as a target.
For every magicless Asta, there is a magically gifted Yuno.
Each character type has these traits for what they bring to the narrative.
Extrovert; who gains energy from social interaction; makes them perfect leads for bombastic and exciting anime shows.
While being talentless and harder working, their lack of skills gives them something to overcome, and their personality provides access to people and circumstances that allow it to happen.
They're lovable underdogs that add energy and excitement to a series.
For the talented loner, this allows them to remain compelling and mysterious. They serve as an obstacle in two ways, a physical challenge for the determined character to surpass and a target to win over and bring into the fold.
Those who are naturally gifted, those who are are not but driven to improve. Have become linked to being reserved or outgoing.
Aska and Yuno are both represent opposite sides of each spectrum.
But what makes them formidable is when they combine and highlight each other's strengths.
