2019 Whitney Cosplay Series: "Classic Tawna" Bonus -- Background Painting Timelapse
A timelapse video of the creative process I take when tackling a digital background for each Whitney cosplay. I've been wanting to make a video like this showcasing a detailed background, and I finally took the time to learn how to record one, so here it is! Enjoy the sped-up progress that resulted in the finished Tawna cosplay. I'll be doing more of these in the future now that I've learned how.
Note that since this WAS technically a test of the software, I failed to check the capture halfway through the lineart drawing phase, so there are entire chunks of the process for that portion that were lost since the capture simply stopped recording. I pieced together what I could save from that section. The actual painting/coloring phase is completely smooth since I had it all figured out by that point.
Total drawing/painting time (for the background only): ~6 hours.

DETAILS ABOUT THE WHITNEY COSPLAYS:
Starting in 2015, my wife Whitney and I have been doing a semi-annual pinup challenge called the Whitney Cosplay Series, featuring her character (a purple cat) dressed as other characters throughout film, television, games, and other media. One reason I have enjoyed doing these pinups so much is because it's given me a chance to really branch out and learn new techniques for digital painting. The vast majority of work I do is traditional (pencil + brush inking), but since Whitney has reached new heights with her own pure digital work (showcasing just what is possible with it), I forced myself to try and make each background environment a 100% digital piece.
As such, each piece has a multi-step creation process, with Whitney and I each tackling our own steps:
1) I draw and ink the original lineart for the cosplay
2) Whitney digitally colors and shades the figure
3) I draw/paint digitally the background to complete the piece
