Route: Birmingham to Peterborough Line
Between Syston (SYS) and Melton Mowbray (MMO) Stations
Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC)
Filming location: Station Lane, Asfordby (LE14 2ED)
A level crossing with automatic half barriers found near the village of Asfordby just outside of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. This level crossing is on a rather busy road with little safe standing in some corners, and it's quite risky getting from the closest lay-by where you'd park to the crossing as it's a blind bend and traffic moves fairly quickly. This also meant it was incredibly risky to pull away from regardless of direction, so please bear this in mind if wishing to visit for yourself. A single lowering features in this video filmed at this far-from-ideal location for filming, for a Class 170 to race by towards Melton for Cambridge.
Despite the above negative points, this is actually quite a rare crossing now. It has the last remaining set of Mk.1 twin-arm half barriers on this entire line from Peterborough to Birmingham, and the final remaining set in Leicestershire as a whole. These are in reasonably good condition, and you'll find the entry-side wigwags fitted to their assemblies, and the alarms on the back of those assemblies too. They're E2S 'Appello' alarms that repeatedly play the voice message "Warning, more than one train may be approaching".
