SODA Fireworks for Kids!
Comparing the reaction between Diet Coke and Mentos to fireworks! 🎆 Watch what happens as we "light" our Diet Coke! 👀
Why does this happen? 🤔 Diet Coke contains a gas called carbon dioxide to give the soda its fizziness and bubbles - when the Mentos are dropped simultaneously into the soda bottle, the carbon dioxide molecules attach to the Mentos, creating lots of bubbles that rise and push the soda out!

Want to keep the fun going? 🤩 Let's explore how surface area affects the rate of reaction! Here's a cool experiment to further explore this phenomenon at home:
🥤Gather Materials: You'll need two types of Mentos - whole and crushed. You will also need two bottles of Coke.
🤔 Hypothesize: Which do you think will cause a bigger reaction, the whole Mentos or the crushed ones?
🧪 Experiment: Drop a whole Mentos into one bottle of Coke and observe. Now carefully crush another Mentos into the second bottle of Coke.
👀 Observe and Compare: Watch how the reaction changes. The crushed Mentos should produce a faster and more vigorous reaction because the increased surface area allows more gas to escape quickly!
📝 What We Learn: This experiment helps us understand the relationship between surface area and reaction rates - a fundamental concept in physics and chemistry. The more surface area available, the faster the reaction occurs.
