Seedling Food Security on Rooftops | PELCAN
According to a recent FAO report, after the pandemic, over half of the Peruvian population faces food insecurity, making it the South American country with the highest index. Therefore, it is crucial to take measures to mitigate these causes and build resilience in our food system.
One strategy is the use of urban spaces for food production through sustainable hydroponic gardens. This is the foundation of the PELCAN project: "Seedling Food Security on Rooftops".
Led by professors Graziella Benedetto and Donatella Carboni from the University of Sassari in Italy and funded by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, this project was carried out by the Peruvian Life Cycle and Industrial Ecology Network (PELCAN) with the support of the NGO "Asociación Protección Población Vulnerable" (APPV) and "Asociación Grupo de Trabajo de Redes" (AGTR).
The objective was to contribute to the food security of 25 migrant children through the teaching of hydroponics, a cultivation method that ensures year-round food production thanks to controlled conditions. Four workshops were held at PUCP, led by experts in climate change, urban development, as well as plant germination and cultivation.
