For #Week45 of my #52Songs52Weeks songwriting challenge my assignment, in honor of Veterans Day, was to write a song about a soldier. I actually spent all week writing a new song about the National Guard and their soldiers. But when it came time to record it, I still wasn’t satisfied. So I reached for a song I wrote a couple of years ago called #JustABoy. After tweaking some lyrics and the melody, I felt it was ready to be shared. This song is about many things but the over-arching theme is the complexities of war. It’s a reminder that soldiers are somebody’s son, somebody’s daughter. It’s a reminder that the enemy isn’t always the full grown threat your mind conjures. It’s a reminder that while life remains unchanged here at home, when a soldier returns, things are anything but normal. It’s about all of that and more. So be sure to check out the lyrics in the YouTube description and let me know what you got out of it. If you enjoy the song, please consider taking a quick second to leave a YouTube comment or give the video a share. It means a lot! Thanks y’all!

Chris Smith – Just A Boy

He boards the plane to go fight in a war
He don’t know the reasons why or what for
Excited just to hold a gun in his hands
They send him off to fight like a man
Touched down in a blistering heat
Ready to die for his country
He’s surprised by the weight of that gun in his hands
He marches on to prove he’s a man

But he’s just a boy
Someone’s baby boy
They trained him well but he’s full of imperfection
Yeah he don’t know why
It’s just his job to try
But the road to hell is paved with good intentions

Shots ring out and he hits the ground
Returning fire at the sound
He’s surprised by the noise of the gun in his hands
As he fires back at invisible men
When fog of war lifts into the sky
A child lay there, death-stare in his eye
Stumbles back, drops the gun from his hands
He signed up to fight other “men”

It was just a boy
Someone’s baby boy
They trained him well but he’s full of imperfection
Yeah he don’t know why
It’s just his job to try
But the road to hell is paved with good intentions

But he’s just a boy
Someone’s baby boy
They trained him well but he’s full of imperfection
Yeah he don’t know why
It’s just his job to try
But the road to hell is paved with good intentions

Returns back to his hometown
Life carried on without him around
