Retribution is the third chapter of A Plague Tale: Innocence, where Amicia and her brother Hugo seek safety in a monastery while navigating the immediate aftermath of their escape from the Inquisition. Following the events of chapter 2, the siblings take refuge within a local monastery in hopes of finding Doctor Laurentius, the only person capable of helping with Hugo's mysterious, advanced condition. The monastery is not safe, and they are soon forced to navigate through a dark, ruined, and rat-infested environment. This chapter introduces the crucial gameplay mechanic of using light to keep massive, hostile rat swarms at bay. Players must use fire sources, such as torches and braziers, to navigate safely. Amicia struggles with the weight of the violent actions she has had to take to protect her brother, while simultaneously trying to protect Hugo from the horrors around them. Despite the dangerous conditions, they continue their search for the monk who can lead them to the doctor.
