In Chapter 1, "The de Rune Legacy," of A Plague Tale: Innocence, 15-year-old noblewoman Amicia de Rune joins her father, Robert, for a hunting trip in the forests of 14th-century France. The calm atmosphere is quickly broken by a disturbing supernatural encounter, hinting at the unnatural, dark forces that have arrived in the region. Following this, the scene shifts to the de Rune estate, where the atmosphere turns dire. Amicia struggles with her relationship with her mother, Beatrice, and is tasked with looking after her young, sheltered brother, Hugo, whom she barely knows. The estate is suddenly attacked by the French Inquisition, led by a menacing figure named Nicholas, who is hunting for Hugo. Amicia is forced to flee the estate with her brother, leaving behind their former life, as their home is invaded and their family is shattered.
