Many of you have asked why anxiety spikes during PMS, so here you go! A breakdown of how hormones may be impacting your mood through the month. The menstrual cycle is actually a 24 to 35 day hormone cycle which comes with almost constant hormone changes throughout the month. Not only do these fluctuations impact our skin, energy levels and sleep, they can also greatly impact women's mental health. The main players are estrogen and progesterone, which directly impact the production of neurotransmitters GABA and Serotonin. GABA and Serotonin play a role in mood regulation, sleep and and anxiety levels.
This video is created by Katie McLaughlin, LPCC-S, founder of Cedar Rose Counseling & Wellness—a holistic therapy practice specializing in anxiety treatment for women.
At Cedar Rose, we believe healing happens when we address the whole person—mind, body, and nervous system. In this video, I break down the difference between anxiety and intuition so you can understand what's actually happening in your body and start healing at the root.
If you're struggling with anxiety and want deeper support: I offer holistic anxiety therapy for women throughout Ohio (in-person West Chester + online statewide). We work on understanding what's happening in your nervous system, healing at the root, and building sustainable calm—not just managing symptoms.

When it comes to managing intrusive thoughts (and unhelpful thoughts in general) its all about how we choose to respond to them. This ACT meditation for worry is a cognitive defusion practice intended to help you defuse from your worried thoughts. Cognitive Defusion is an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) practice which helps us to take a step back from our thoughts long enough to remember that they are just thoughts and not rules we must abide by. This skill helps us to build psychological flexibility, which is key for general mental health and wellness.
