My NEW HOUSE: mines and memories - PART 1
Finally, the open house for my new home! Those who follow me on Instagram know we faced some unexpected setbacks, which made this moment take longer than planned. But that's a topic for another post.
Choosing the land was a process full of changes. Initially, the idea was to build a single-story house. But after a long search, we found a 250 m² lot on a dead-end street, super quiet, even though it was close to one of the busiest avenues in São Paulo. It was the perfect spot: close to the children's school and my husband's work.
To transform the land into our home, I spoke with several architects until I found Andrés Gálvez, of Gálvez & Márton Arquitetura. At the first meeting, he simply surveyed the space. On the second visit, he picked up a pencil and sketched out the future house. This gesture touched me, as it reminded me of how my grandmother's beach house was designed years ago by Pepe Asbun—who, coincidentally, was Andrés' mentor. We only discovered this connection later.
The decorator was architect Nildo José, known for his cozy projects. I chose Nildo not only for his award-winning work but also for the tranquility he exudes. This was essential to calm all the expectations involved in the project.
The house is full of fond memories. In the living room, for example, we used pieces from my personal collection and many found finds, such as the vintage wicker sofa by Armando Cerello, a chair refurbished by Casa Grim, and the Pitesti sofa by Century, facing a painting by artist Verena Matzen. The Planalto coffee table by Danilo Vale and the Tangará bar, designed by Luis Pons for Vermeil, complete the space. We also have a Percival Lafer armchair restored by Bakos, all on By Kamy rugs, and a scavenged antique kilim.
Among the most special items in the house is a sculpture by Demetre Chiparus, which passed through the hands of my great-grandmother, my grandmother, and is now mine. We also have a painting by Gervane de Paula, an artist from Mato Grosso, the state where I grew up.
The house features thoughtful choices for everyday use, but also some less functional decisions. One example is the brick flooring throughout the living area and kitchen, which I knew from the beginning would be less practical, but I chose anyway because I like the texture.
We built everything from scratch. As many have warned me, the project took longer than planned, and in the end, we moved in while the house was still under renovation.
Today, this is the living area of the house where I live. And I know that when I'm 60, she'll have even more of my story, the memories we'll create, and the transformations that are yet to come. I'll be posting parts 2 and 3 soon.
