Doing a homestay with a nomadic Mongolian family was something we wanted to do before ever leaving on our trip. Luckily, our 4-day/3-night tour of Mongolia included not one, but TWO homestays with Mongolian nomads.
We don't usually opt for organized tours, but in Mongolia it's by far the easiest way and most affordable (best?) way to travel. The "Golden Gobi" tour began in the morning in Ulaanbaatar. Ulaanbaatar is Mongolia's capital and home to 1/3 of the country's population, so leaving for the countryside (the Mongolian steppe) was quite literally a breath of fresh air.
The day began with Brittany holding massive Mongolian Golden Eagle once used for hunting. From there, we continued on stopping at several sites including the world's largest statue of Genghis Khan and Turtle Rock in Terelj National Park. At night, we stayed with a nomadic Kazakh family that makes their living raising cattle, sheep, and horses on the Mongolian steppe. It was an unforgettable way to experience Mongolian culture and we can't recommend doing a Mongolian homestay enough!
