How to get a Speeding Ticket with a Radar Detector
We get a K-band speeding ticket in a small Utah town with a drop in the speed limit from 65 to 40 even though we were using a radar detector.
Our Escort MAXcam 360c did its job and the mistake was mine.
The small town was bracketed by K-band speed signs and the officer was using an unmarked sivler pick up truck which we passed and did not notice.
As I was starting to leave the town, I began to return to my original speed which the officer must have noticed and so he targeted me from the rear.
This was the first time I have received a speeding ticket on K-band police radar while being among K-band speed signs which masked the genuine radar detection.
The officer used a Stalker Patrol operating on K-band.
Upon review of this video, it appears we picked up three K band frequencies, 24.159 GHz, 24.121 GHz, and then 24.113 GHz, which appears to have been the police radar frequency.
It appears he observed my speed increase and then hit with K band from the rear as 24.113 GHz was alerting from the rear with a high level of urgency.
I didn’t notice the nuances of the alerting, although if I were, it probably wouldn’t have made a difference as his I/O shot would have acquired my speed nearly instantly.
The moral of the story:
Driving with a radar detector does not guarantee you will be ticket free.
Make sure your radar detector is sensitive AND responsive to K-band detections.
Be mindful of small towns which often operate K-band radar.
Configure your radar detector, if it can, to alert clearly to additional bogie detections.
Be pleasant during the traffic stop.
Negotiate at the window if you can, more times than not, you'll benefit.
