Most modern homes are designed as enclosed units. ZIKR in Palakkad is designed by Barefoot Architects as an open climatic system centered around a courtyard.
Instead of separating rooms into isolated functions, the architecture organizes the entire home around a central courtyard that regulates light, air, and daily movement. This becomes the climatic and social core of the house, ensuring that every space remains visually and environmentally connected.
The planning is shaped by proximity and community. Built within a cluster of family-owned land, the home is intentionally positioned to remain close to surrounding relatives’ houses, turning the layout into an extension of a larger social fabric rather than a standalone residence.
Verandahs and transitional edges become as important as interior rooms. Living and dining spaces open directly toward the courtyard sit-out, allowing indoor and outdoor living to merge naturally without losing the structure of traditional Kerala tharavadu planning.
Material choices reinforce this continuity between tradition and adaptation. Reclaimed furniture, rattan cane weaving, Kota green stone, and Jaisalmer yellow flooring are combined with contemporary detailing, creating a layered architectural language rooted in craft but open to modern use.
A retractable courtyard shading system and terracotta jaalis introduce controlled variation allowing rain, breeze, and filtered light to become active design elements rather than environmental challenges.
