DNA EXTRACTION Remote LAB
Since everyone is home from school due to COVID-19 we have decided to mix things up and bring a lab to YOU right where you're at in your very own home. This is our first attempt at streaming LIVE so Today, believe it or not, we'll be EXTRACTING DNA from a fruit of your choice from things you can find right around the house. If you got our email then you probably already have the stuff you need ready to go. If not, you can check out the list below for what you will want to gather up to get started.
Stuff You'll Need:
1 Piece of fruit - Banana and strawberries work best. Each cell of these fruits contains a HUGE amount of DNA! Soft fruits are best, as they are easiest to break up manually and don’t require blending.
2 Ice - At least a handful of ice cubes. Check the night before so you can make them if you don’t have any!
3 Table Salt - Just a pinch is needed
4 Liquid Dish Soap - Dawn brand works really well if you have it, but any brand will work!
5 Small piece of fabric (can cut/about the size of a coffee filter needed) - An old T-Shirt works well, as well as cheesecloth or any other rag. The less absorbent, the better. We are using this as our “filter” as an alternative to cheese cloth but if you’re lucky enough to have cheese cloth at home feel free to use that if you’d like.
6 Rubbing Alcohol (only about a tablespoon or 2) - The higher the % purity, the better!
7 Cup - Any plastic cups, glasses, tumblers or other small containers will work. Clear ones are ideal so you can see what’s happening through them. A small container, such as an empty tube or a shot glass will come in handy but is not absolutely necessary.
8 A toothpick, skewer, cotton swab, or even a piece of wire or a nail, twig or other skinny, thin object will do
9 A plastic sandwich or other small sealable bag.
