Keratoconus is an eye condition that affects the cornea, the front part of the eye. It causes the normally domed cornea to thin and take on a cone-like shape, distorting light as it passes through. In its early stages, keratoconus can often be managed effectively with glasses and contact lenses, making it virtually unnoticed. As it progresses to mild to moderate stages, treatment options like rigid gas permeable lenses, scleral lenses, or piggyback lenses become available. Keratoconus typically begins at a young age and progresses into one's 60s, but with various treatment options, it can be managed throughout one's life.
