Glaucoma is an eye disease, often linked to high eye pressure, that damages the optic nerve at the back of the eye. This nerve transmits visual information to the brain and is crucial for vision. Glaucoma can lead to light sensitivity and eye pain, so immediate attention is needed if you experience these symptoms. However, most cases are primary open-angle glaucoma, which typically has no noticeable symptoms.
People over 60 and African Americans are at higher risk for glaucoma, but anyone can develop it. The key is regular annual eye exams. While glaucoma is symptomless and can result in permanent blindness, early detection through routine check-ups can preserve your vision for a lifetime.
