Recent rain has caused extensive grass growth across NSW. Grass fires are unpredictable. They can start easily and spread quickly. In fact, grass fires can move three times faster than a bush fire, leaving you little time to get ready. Grass fires on farms can also destroy homes, crops and livelihoods. Hazard reduction is just one way of preparing for bush fires โ€“ it doesn't remove the threat of fire, and it doesn't remove the need for you and your family to be prepared. Arguably there are benefits in reducing the risk of grass and bush fires by the responsible, controlled use of this practice.

"Black Summer" Bushfires 2019/20
Across Australia, fires raged as the effects of heatwave and prolonged dry conditions created a perfect storm during the period known as Black Summer 2019 to 2020. So intense, numerous, widespread and fast-burning were these fires across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, they were described as โ€˜megafiresโ€™. They caused some of the most extensive damage to ecosystems, forests and public land in generations.

The 2019โ€“20 bushfire season was the worst New South Wales (NSW) has recorded. Higher than average temperatures and low moisture levels in bushfire fuels following several years of drought enabled devastating fires to burn across much of the state, with intense bushfire weather conditions continuing through most of the fire season. Over the course of a few months, 26 lives were lost, 2,448 homes were destroyed and 5.5 million hectares of land was burnt and around 3 billion animals were killed or displaced. The impact on NSW communities, farmers, local businesses, wildlife and bushland was unprecedented.
