James J. Saul was born in Salem, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. He describes his experiences in training, on the USS Oklahoma, and on the 6th of December. Saul also describes the attack on Pearl Harbor and his escape through a small port hole in the washroom of the Oklahoma.
