A new volcanic eruption just began on the French island of Reunion which has a population of approximately 900,000. Specifically, four fissures erupted at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano to the east of Madagascar, each feeding a distinct lava flow. These lava flows are continuing to expand in size, and are occurring within the volcano's northeast rift zone.
